The Torah refers to perfumes and fragrance 58 times, including a recipe for ketoret in the book of Exodus, which comes with an admonition from G-d never to smell it, on pain of excommunication. We will discuss and smell about ten of the 26 natural ingredients and where they are mentioned in the Torah—things like Hyssop, Cistus, and Spikenard—and learn about the plants, where they grow, and how they were used over the millennia not just for fragrance but for their pharmacological properties. We'll learn why fragrances are mentioned so frequently in the Torah, and students will gain a new appreciation for the way the world smelled during biblical times. NOTE: no ketoret will be made.
